"I believes that everything is connected to God,
even thought I knows that science has been a great advantage to humanity, and it is making our
world more understandable."
Intro to Social Justice Essay By Wilmari Tores Madera
Understandably, the United States of America has many issues with people with special
needs who are unable to stand for themselves. This nation consists of diversity and different
cultures because the opportunities provided in this country offer a better future. In 2020, forty
million people in the United States were immigrants, and the number is growing by the day
(Budiman). It is time to reconsider the rights that every single warrior coming to the United
States deserves regardless of their origin, race, sexuality, gender, or even religion. Not only are
immigrants being deprived, but so are people in the country who built everything we are, such as
black people.
After learning about the different types of oppression and connecting with people who
have experienced discrimination of various kinds, such as racism and colorism, I can say that we
are getting better together, united. The previous statement is evidence because, as Nicole
Hannah-Jones stated in her book The 1619 Project, we are a society recovering from a past with
horrific human rights violations, but we must commit to having honesty in humanity and justice
(Hannah-Jones, 283). We can start by being good neighbors so we can show respect to those who
are going through humbling times and confusion. In addition, we cannot assume that others are
less because, at the end of the day, we are a family trying to make progress in our lives.
Consequently, we can not live with a lack of treatment and proper deference in the twenty-first
century (Hannah-Jones, 299).
Also, after accepting the diversity around us, society has to provide the best education for
people with disabilities. As Kayla Johnson said, the learning assistant from the College of New
Jersey, a disability does not define who we are. It would be great if we could leave behind our
ignorance about ourselves and experience a comfortable environment for all people. There is a
shield for individuals unable to be accepted because most people do not know that they are
stronger and more powerful than ordinary people. For example, Naty Rico was unable to walk by
herself without the help of a walker, but her aspiration to continue her education and make her
family proud was more resistant than any obstacle (Rico).
"The negative treatment described
stems from ignorance and lack of knowledge around issues of disability" (Adams et al. 472).
My family is low-income and has come to the United States to provide my sister and
with academic success. I can say that my mom, uncle, and two of my sisters have struggled
because they do not need to speak English. Nevertheless, it does not mean they are less. They
intellectual individuals wishing to communicate their knowledge in English and resolve their
personal problems alone, but because of the difficulty of the language or age, they cannot speal
second language.
We come from a country rich in natural resources. Consequently, my mother is an expert
in cooking and old-fashioned techniques for women. While I was recording the interviews, I
realized that my family is wonderful because we are part of a culture that cannot be replaced
with material worth. After taking the photos to my aunts and co-workers, I formed the idea that
all of us have problems accepting our differences. For example, my aunt, Altagracia Madera, was
concerned if she should have to make-up on because our family genes inherited liver spots onour arms and faces. As a result, taking time with my family to complete a project made me
realize that I am lucky to have a unique culture and a family that is special and lovely. They
remind me how precious our identity is and why we need to respect our differences.
